This year I’ve decide to homeschool my four children ages 12, 6, 4 and 2. This is one of the best decisions that I have ever made. My husband and I have adopted an eclectic style of teaching that will allow the children to utilize many different resources for their learning.

Our decision to homeschool came because of a rift that materialized in my relationship with our eldest daughter. Her withdrawal began shortly after starting the sixth grade and progressed negatively throughout the year. Academically she was doing great but emotionally she was buckling under the pressure to fit in. She began to rely more on the opinions of her peers even if they were harmful in nature to her self esteem. A large number of her friends had boyfriends and some had already been intimate. She was feeling the pressure from her peers as well as from her father and I. She didn’t want to disappoint us, but she also wanted to fit in.

The decision was difficult initially for us all, but thank God for faith. Faith gave me the courage to take on a challenge that I didn’t believe I could handle. God also gave her the discipline to accept the things that she could not change. Today we are grateful for what God has shown us about ourselves. He has shown us that we are made perfect in Him and that it is in Him where we find our greatest strength.

My children have learned so much in a short time. I have never seen them so excited about learning. My oldest daughter is a happier and more confident young lady, who is able to make better choices in who her friends are. Our support in her decisions are more tangible for her. She knows that our opinions are genuine and for her good, versus the feedback she had receive from her old schoolmates. She is really focusing on her gifts and talents and how she can use them to discover who she is. She recently started a bible quizzing competition at church and will be beginning track at the local YMCA in the fall.

So glad you decided to homeschool. I hope you had a good year. It was probably a stretch for your oldest daughter coming from a public school environment. At least that is what I hear from others. May the Lord bless you,
