On February 18th we made our final deposit toward our 3-6 months emergency fund. We decided to go with a 3 month emergency fund because it was a lower financial goal. We plan to increase our fund to 6 months saved after we complete step #4 of the Total Money Make Over and after we make our extra mortgage payment for this year.
If you don’t already know, step #4 of the Dave Ramsey’s Total Money Make Over is to save 15% of our income. We actually started that step on February 7th, when ING offered their $50 FREE cash when you open an IRA promotion. We hadn’t completed step#3 which is a fully funded emergency fund at the time, but it just made sense to reroute one of the emergency fund deposits just to snag the FREE $50. (thus starting step #4 a few weeks early).
3 John 1:2
Beloved, I wish above all things that thou mayest prosper and be in health, even as thy soul prospereth.
So I’m really excited about where we are. We’ve come a long way and it’s almost unbelievable to accept the fact that we are so close to being debt free. This is a huge goal for us for three reasons. First, we know that God does not desire or encourage his people to be in debt.
The rich rule over the poor, and the borrower is slave to the lender.
And secondly, debt has kept us from being more generous with our time and resources.
And finally, we want to become missionaries and want to go knowing that we don’t have any debts holding us back from doing what we believe GOD is calling us too. We’ve decided to put off international mission work until our youngest son, now 7, is at least a teenager. We do however have plans to do a local mission trip sometime soon.
