My husband and I have adopted a debt free lifestyle several years ago and I wish that I can say that we never looked back — but we have. Each time the next step required faith beyond our own abilities, we’ve looked back and wondered, “are we cut out for this debt free stuff?”

Living a debt free lifestyle requires a whole lot of faith.

It took faith to get rid of the credit cards when I had no idea how we would handle emergencies.

It took faith to save that first $1,000 baby emergency fund while we were so deep in debt.

It took faith to believe we could do it again the first, second and third times we depleted the emergency fund.

This whole journey has been a grasping and clawing to hold on to Gods words despite what our circumstances looked like.

We have ASKed God time and time again for His help knowing that we could not accomplish such a great feat without him. We were and are constantly SEEKing his face for direction on how to dig ourselves out of debt and in return use or experience to glorify him. We stayed in Gods face because everything we’d tried in our own power had failed. We are constantly KNOCKing on Gods heart and asking for His grace and mercy to help use through each hurdle.

We’ve surrounded ourselves with His word by reading it and displaying it in our home. It was always His word that gave me a peace in the midst of of uncertainty.

I used to wonder why God gave so many commands to the people of Israel as well as the prophets, to write His word in so many different places. I now understand how having a constant reminder of Gods word helps me live out His commands.

God’s word is living and powerful which is why we should make every effort to surround ourselves with it. God commands the children of Isreal to;

“Bind them continually on their heart, and tie them around their necks.” Psalm 6:21.

He says again, “Bind them upon your fingers,  write them upon the table of your heart”. Psalm 7:3

And again he commands them to “Write them on the door frames of their houses and on their gates”. Deuteronomy 11:20.

Every step of this journey has been about God moving us away from self-reliance to faith reliance. It has been the constant time spent in His word and surrounded by His word that has given me the faith I’ve needed to meet each challenge. Dayspring has enabled me to surround myself with more or Gods word and they want to do the same for 1 A Proverbs Wife reader.
