Today’s Disaster is Tomorrows’s Blessing So Give Thanks!!

Just two weeks before Thanksgiving and my lower level floods. It was my own careless mistake.

See, what had happened was…

We being the frugal people that we are…have refused to replace our washing machine which is in 50% working order. It does everything it’s supposed to do except shut off once the water fills to the top of the tub.

It’s been this way for about 20 months now. We decided not to replace it in an effort to save some money. Well I started a load of clothes last week and was distracted which led to me letting the water overfill the tub for close to two hours.

We went downstairs to find the lower level flooded.

It’s okay though because instead of being angry with myself I am thankful that I get to replace my 10 year old carpet. What a blessing.

We could have used this unfortunate event to tell our family not to come over but instead we are opening our home as planned.

Here’s why?

Hospitality is not about having a picture perfect home.

It’s not about putting on a a show and acting as if everything is perfect in your life.

For me it’s about sharing your life with all it’s ups and downs.

This situation has reminded me to be thankful for a few things.

  • I’m thankful that we have an emergency fund and that if we felt shallow enough to be embarrassed by our floor situation we could go and have the floors done before Thanksgiving.
  • I’m thankful for a husband who did not fuss at me for letting the water flood the lower level.
  • I’m thankful that we have the discipline to wait a while and not dip into the emergency fund to replace the floor but rather pay for it with non emergency fund cash.
  • I’m thankful for the two story home and that we can still open our home to our friends and family this Thanksgiving.
  • I am thankful for remembering that Thanksgiving is not about me and what I have but about how I can be a blessing to other.
  • I’m thankful for this day that has been set aside for celebrating  Thanksgiving but am so much more thankful for all that God gives me to be thankful for the other 364 days of the year.
