It’s so hard to think about shopping for gifts after last Friday’s tragedy in Newtown, CT. Another event even closer to home for me that’s left me feeling uneasy is my mother in laws pending surgery.
She headed to Charleston yesterday to meet with her neurologist and is scheduled to have surgery on an aneurism this morning. I have spoken words of faith and encouragement to her and to my children while making sure to keep boundaries around the thoughts of worry and what-if’s.
Imagining Christmas without her is unimaginable. Instead of focusing on the worst case scenario, I put the fears out of my mind and focus on the promises of God.
Here are some that I’ve been holding tight to.
- For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, saith the Lord, thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you an expected end. Jerimiah 29:11
- The Lord will perfect that which concerneth me: thy mercy, O Lord, endureth for ever: forsake not the works of thine own hands. Psalm 138:8
- And as it is appointed unto men once to die…Hebrews 9:27
- Blessed be God, even the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies, and the God of all comfort; who comforteth us in all our tribulation, that we may be able to comfort them which are in any trouble, by the comfort wherewith we ourselves are comforted of God. For as the sufferings of Christ abound in us, so our consolation also aboundeth by Christ. 2 Corinthians 1:3-5
In addition to replacing my fear with faith in Gods word, I fill my time with things that bring me joy like my children and laughter.
One thing that makes me laugh are these VerizonWireless videos comedian Kevin Hart has been sharing over the past three weeks. This week’s video is about holiday shopping.
