Honduras Mission Trip with Saidah from A Proverbs Wife

Honduras Mission Trip

In early October, my husband Germaine and I traveled to Honduras to serve a ministry based in Tegucigalpa. We were there for 7 days and in that time God moved on my heart in ways I could have never imagined.

I never thought I could fall in love with a group of children so quickly and have them impact my heart in ways I thought only my children could.

About a decade ago, God began calling my husband and I to do more with our time and resources. This was around the time we began working on become debt free. Since that time, God has taken us on a journey that’s involved sponsoring two children through Compassion Ministries, Supporting Operation Christmas Child every year, financially supporting missionaries, regularly donating and now sponsoring another sweet little boy through the Lamb Institute where we served in Honduras.

Blogging for Compassion | A Letter To God

Dear God,

Thank you for allowing our family to take care of Smohal. Everything that happened in the process of choosing her was divinely ordained. We are blessed and deeply honored to have been chosen by You to care for her financially.

Lord help us be faithful to this obligation for as long as You desire. And help us be sensitive to Your leading in sponsoring more children.

You know our hearts desire for those in need especially women and children. You’ve laid this passion for the hurting on our hearts and only You will be able to help us fulfill the what You are calling us to.

Thank you Lord for giving us the courage to sponsor a child despite all of our personal financial obligations. You know the  sacrifice it will take to send this money each month but we have faith that You are able to perform what ever You’ve called us to do.

We’ve put off sponsoring way too long because we thought we should be completely debt free first. But You know how my heart wouldn’t stop aching. And You know how my conscience would convict me every time I saw a hurting child.

“Have I not wept for those in trouble? Has not my soul grieved for the poor?” Job 30:25

While it wasn’t clear at first if we should do both the sponsoring and debt freedom journey simultaneously, I went with my gut and it felt right as soon as we chose Smohal.

It was You that helped me take the step in faith this month and I’ll need Your help again every month until my faith is stronger.

You know our financially situation and how much we desire to be debt free, but I don’t want $38 toward our debt to be the thing that prevented one child from coming to know You.

“If anyone has material possessions and sees his brother in need but has no pity on him, how can the love of God be in him? Dear children, let us not love with words or tongue but with actions and in truth.” 1 John 3:17-18

We are humbled that you’ve given use hearts for world missions and while we are not sure about how we will get there we do know that You are leading the way.

Give us faith for this journey. Help us to keep our eyes on You.

“Religion that God our Father accepts as pure and faultless is this: to look after orphans and widows in their distress and to keep oneself from being polluted by the world.” James 1:27

Do you feel like God is calling you to sponsor a child? If so, head over and choose a child who’s waiting. If you are undecided or this is not something you can do right now, consider visiting Compassion.com and praying over the children.

Blogging for Compassion | God is Faithful to the Faithful

I’ve been talking about sponsoring a child during the entire month of August. I was really pumped up during the first two weeks of the month. As with most financial investments, I don’t always start out knowing where the funds will come from.

For most families to take on another financial responsibility outside of their regular month expenses means sacrificing something. You’d either sacrifice time to work extra hours to make more money or sacrifice something you need or want.

I decided to sacrifice time and began working on this project. I made a commitment to use the proceeds to sponsor a child each month but the proceeds did not equal enough to sponsor even one child. 🙁

The decision to sponsor a child is a huge deal to me and not something that I take lightly. My biggest fear in making a commitment from my irregular monthly income is that, “what if I can’t afford it one month?” 🙁

I don’t want to let down a child that is depending on me. What it really boils down to is

  • I lack 100% faith. (I’m at about 20 – 30% depending on what my income looks like)
  • We can’t afford it with out any extra source of income.
  • We are on a lean budget and where every dollar counts.

As I sit here and write this, all the the above comes off sounding like excuses.  I used them to talk myself out of what I know I God is calling me to do.

She stretcheth out her hand to the poor; yea, she reacheth forth her hands to the needy. — Proverbs 31:20

There will never be a right time to sponsor a child. If I wait until I am debt free and have more spending money, it won’t be an act of faith.

I don’t think God is asking me to sponsor a child out of my own ability, He’s called me to do it out of his ability to provide.

As I went to do my online banking this morning, I saw that my banks Way2Save program helped me accumulate $33.75 during the month of August. That money has not been designated to any other financial responsibilities so could I consider it God’s way of providing?

I then added to that the $6 I made from the project I mentioned earlier and that put me at a grand total of $39.75.

I hurried over here to see how much it would cost to sponsor a child and it is $38. My total un-designated money was a little over what I needed to sponsor a child for this month. 🙂

I started this article with the intention of not sponsoring a child. I even thought about not mentioning it again to you all just hoping you’d forget my commitment, but I couldn’t forget it.

I couldn’t forget how I felt when I got the email in August that Compassion International wanted me to blog about child sponsorship during the month of September. It was like another confirmation that sponsoring a child is what God wanted me to do.

So now that the money is in hand, I’ll sit down with the kids and prayerfully choose a child.

If you are feeling like God is calling you to sponsor a child but don’t quite know where the funds will come from remain faithful to His call and wait on Him.

Faithful is he that calls you, who also will do it. — 1 Thessalonians 5:24

In the meantime, consider heading over here and praying over the children.
