I have been trying to prepare my lesson plan for next year but have been unsuccessful. Each time I try I just don’t seem to be organized enough to get past the first two school weeks in August.
I’ve seen examples of detailed forty week lesson plans and have wondered how simple it would be to know what I am going to teach for the next forty weeks. Just thinking about the what-ifs of planning such an extensive schedule paralyzes me with fear. Like, what if I plan to focus on volcanoes, earthquakes and plate tectonics and during the year the children have an opportunity to attend a space program or learn about fossils through a local museum? Do I stay on course with the lesson plan or junk it and go on a space adventure.
I am not a home school veteran by any stretch of the imagination. I’ve enjoyed going where the children’s curiosity has taken us. But at the same time I want to teach them what they would be learning if they were in public school as well. I have learned long ago not to plan to far into the future. I either end up wasting time that could have been spent with my husband and children or becoming frustrated because my plans didn’t work out as planned.
