Below is a unit study for World History. It also encompasses reading and geography. The focus of this unit study is to introduce my children to apartheid in South Africa. It will also familiarize them with some of the major participants that helped in eradicating of apartheid.
Begin by reading the Nelson (Rolihlahla) Mandela biography found at the above link. Then complete the tasks below.
The Task: Create a Poster About An African Country
o Locate the countries visited by Nelson Mandela on an African map.
o Select one country and create an information poster in the shape of that country.
o Include basic facts about the country.
o Tell why the country is important in African history.
The Process: Exploring the Web, Creating a Product
Make a list the African countries visited by Nelson Mandela.
Find each country visited on the African map.
Choose one country for your project.
After choosing a country, take notes of at least 10 important facts for your information poster.
Draw the outline of the country you have selected on a large sheet of paper.
Design your poster to include 10 facts and 5 drawings which illustrate the facts about exports, crops, clothing, shelter etc.
Write a paragraph telling how the country is important in African-American history. Glue the report to the back of the poster.
How You Will Be Graded:
The information poster about one African countries visited by Nelson Mandela must include:
o The name of the country and 10 important facts
o Five drawings related to the facts
o A paragraph, glued to the back of the poster, that explains how the country is important in African-American history
